Friopuerto will build a coldstore at the port of Sines, Portugal

On Wednesday July 15th a 30 year term concession contract was signed in Sines between the Port Authority of Sines and the Algarve Ports (APS) with Friopuerto. This being the starting point of a project that the subsidiary of Grupo Romeu was studying for months under the name of FP Sines (Friopuerto Sines).

With an investment of 3 million Euros for its first phase, this will be the fourth Friopuerto coldstore installation. On a concession lot of 4,000 m2, the cold store will have 3,100 m2 to accommodate two chambers for fresh and chilled products, mostly fruits (from 0º C to + 18° C) with an initial capacity of 1,000 pallet positions, Docking area operations of 750 m2 and a total of 8 docks for trucks and reefers. The project includes a second phase that would double the capacity of the facility and will also add dual temperature chambers for the storage of frozen products. The construction is scheduled to start in September with a
run time of six months, to begin operating in March 2016.

Statement by Javier Romeu, Director of FRIOPUERTO and Romeu Group:

  • The future Sines cold store facility has all the strategic sense for Friopuerto. Fruit traffics are growing in Spain and Portugal Sines is ideally located and maintains a strategic position to compete in this business, both for imports from Latin America, as well as for regional exports. Being the largest port in Portugal with 1.2 million TEUs in 2014, Sines is also one of the most important on the Iberian Peninsula.
  • In 2015 Sines traffic continues to grow at a good pace, no doubt thanks to the commitment of MSC to Sines, the good services and practices of the Port in general and those of Terminal XXI, in particular.
  • 2015 is a key year for Friopuerto since we opened Veracruz in Mexico, expanded Valencia in Spain, will start building soon in Sines and will inaugurate Tanger in Morocco.
  • >With the facilities of Valencia, Sines and Tanger, Friopuerto aims to become the regional leader in the Western Mediterranean in the field of storage and logistics at temperature controlled for foreign trade.
